Al Capone
Alphonse Gabriel Capone was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1899. His
parents were immigrants from Italy. Alphonse went by the easier name of Al. he
was a very bright student but was expelled from his Catholic school at the age
of 14 for hitting his female teacher across the face. This seemed to be the
horrid start of his violence. He soon joined a gang called the Brooklyn Rippers.
He was harassing a woman outside of a club and her brother slashed Al's
face three times on the left side. These scars gave him the well-known nickname
of "Scarface." His close friends liked to call him "Snorky" because of wounds. A
married Al went to Chicago in 1918 and later met up with his wife and young
child. Al moved to Chicago to be with Johnny Torrio, a gang member who was with
Al and the Rippers. In 1925,
Torrio was wounded in an attack and turned over his work to
Capone. Capone controlled large portions of the
Chicago streets. This provided an estimated US $100 million per year in
revenue. This money was made by very many illegal enterprises like
gambling, prostitution, and the wealthiest liquor.
